Dear Members of IUOE Local 727,

By now, almost everyone has heard about the unfortunate incident in Annapolis which one of our ambulances was involved that has been broadcast on social media.

While the details surrounding the incident are still under investigation, we do know that there was no patient on board at the time, and thankfully our two paramedics escaped without physical injury. Although shaken, it is important to recognize that incidents such as this can leave a lasting emotional impact on those involved.

Many of us have seen the images and videos circulating on social media showing the ambulance being hoisted from the bay. These images were difficult to watch, particularly when considering how differently this situation could have ended and the potential tragic loss of two dedicated and vibrant paramedics.

What has been equally upsetting has been the volume of negative and condemning comments posted online, often without any knowledge of the facts or understanding of the circumstances. There will, of course, be a proper investigation. The purpose of that investigation is not only to determine what happened, but also to identify lessons learned and to ensure measures are put in place to help prevent a similar incident from occurring again.

Unfortunately, the paramedics involved will undoubtedly see many of these comments. Public criticism and ridicule — especially from current or former paramedics — only adds to the emotional burden they are already carrying. Mistakes and accidents can happen in any profession, and sometimes comments made in haste on social media are later regretted. We would also like to acknowledge and thank Brad Landry, one of our Paramedic Instructors, for speaking out against the negativity and reminding others of the importance of compassion and professionalism.

Right now, these paramedics need our support, reassurance, and understanding. In the days and weeks ahead, it is important that they know their union brothers and sisters stand behind them.

We ask all members to refrain from posting negative comments or engaging in speculation online. Instead, let us continue to support one another and demonstrate the professionalism, solidarity, and compassion that define IUOE Local 727.
